Pulpits

A pulpit is where the preacher stands to preach his or her sermon.
(A sermon is a talk based on something in the Bible.)

St Paul's, Daybrook, Nottingham

This fine carved stone pulpit is in a Church of England (Anglican) church.

It is raised up so that everyone can see the preacher easily.

It has a sloping rest to put notes on and a microphone holder.

This panel on the front of the pulpit shows Jesus talking to his disciples.

The Church of The Good Shepherd, Nottingham

This pulpit is in a modern Roman Catholic church.

The white cloth is called a pulpit fall.

Take a closer look at the embroidered decoration on it.

In the centre is a book - the Bible.

On it are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet - alpha and omega.

Check the page on Symbols to find out why.

Around the book is a grapevine.

Jesus once called himself 'the vine' and called his disciples 'the branches'.

What do you think Jesus meant
when he said that?

Clue: What happens to a branch of a plant when it is cut off?

You can read the whole of what
Jesus said in John's Gospel.
It's chapter 15 verses 1-8.

What do you think?

This dramatic pulpit fall is in a village church in Gloucester-
shire. It shows a phoenix rising from the ashes.

Do you know the legend of the phoenix? If not, find out!
This legend is not in the Bible, so why do you think Christians remember it?

Holy Trinity Church, Wickwar

You might like to create a design for a pulpit fall. What symbols would you put on it? Why would you choose those?
